By the name of Olivia Jane Cockburn, she was born on March 10, 1984 in New York City and raised in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. His mother, Leslie Cockburn, is a producer and journalist of 60 Minutes New Magazine America. His father, Andrew Cockburn, was also a journalist born in London from a British upper class family and raised in Ireland. Olivia has an older sister, Chloe Cockburn, a civil rights lawyer in New York City, and a younger brother named Charlie.

Olivia attended Georgetown Day School which is a prestigious school in Washington, D.C., and also Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, she graduated in 2002. Later, Olivia Wilde was accepted at Bard College, but postponed her registration three times to continue acting. Olivia then studied at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Ireland.

On June 7, 2003, when Olivia was 19, Olivia Wilde married Tao Ruspoli, an Italian filmmaker and musician. But after 8 years together, Olivia and Ruspoli announced that they were separated.
